Two new adapters provide easy programming for Microchip Technology 8-bit PIC® Microcontrollers
SANTA CLARA, Calif., October 14, 2002 - Emulation Technology, Inc. (ET), the industry's leading manufacturer and marketer of Adapters, Sockets and Interconnect Solutions has expanded its broad line of device programming adapters (Adapt-A-Socket®) with the introduction of its new, first of their kind, QFN/MLF Programming Adapters. Designed to meet the needs of design engineers programming and prototype testing the increasingly popular Quad Flat Non-Leaded (QFN) and Micro Lead-Frame (MLF) chip package, the adapters support the 8-bit Microchip® Technology (NASDAQ: MCHP) PIC® Microcontrollers in 8-pin and 28-pin QFN/MLF packages.
The QFN/MLF Programming Adapters support the following Microchip 8-pin PIC Microcontrollers: PIC12C508A, PIC12C509A, PIC12C671, PIC12C672, and the following Microchip 28-pin PIC microcontrollers: PIC16C62B, PIC16C63A, PIC16C72A, PIC16C73B, PIC16F73, PIC16F76.
The QFN/MLF package's growing popularity is representative of the need for smaller IC packages. More and more designers are working on applications with space constraints, as well as heat and power limitations. Using the QFN/MLF in designs helps engineers avoid the constraints and limitations. The QFN/MLF is smaller and thinner (consumes less area) than other similar leaded packages, it has a lead-frame on the bottom of the package which provides excellent thermal performance, and the combination of eliminated gull-wing leads and shortened wire lengths decrease self-inductance by half compared to a similar leaded package.
The adapter's top-loading, burn-in socket design readily meets the needs of design engineers looking for a quick and easy QFN/MLF programming adapter solution. Its space-saving 8-pin or 28-pin base accommodates engineers' programming needs and eliminates the necessity to create a cumbersome workaround. The QFN/MLF Programming Adapter serves a dual role as the signal mapping enables it to be used for QFN/MLF prototyping, quality and reliability testing.
